Extend your home WiFi network

My Home WiFi Network works fine anywhere in the house, but now that the warm weather is here I want to take my iPad 2 outside. Unfortunately my Bell supplied Linksys WAP610N just doesn’t have the ooomph to push the signal through brick walls.

What to do..I suppose I could have sprung for a new top of the line router..it almost certainly will work but is overkill and expensive. So I continued the hunt until  I found the D-Link DAP-1522 Xtreme N Duo Wireless Bridge/Access Point tucked away on a bottom shelf at Best Buy.

It seemed to be the answer to my problem..not only is it a dual band access point it has four gigabit ethernet ports. Perfect for my home entertainment centre in the family room which is next to the both outside locations where I want to use my iPad 2. I already have an ethernet cable installed so the extra ports allow me to connect my PVR and Blu-Ray player to the home network.

Currently I have it installed inside the equipment cabinet..it works on the 5GHz band which I selected for the lack of interference..it is the only 5GHz router in my neighbourhood where there are eight 2.4GHz routers within range of my house. Tucked away in the cabinet is not the ideal situation though..I have tested it on top of the cabinet and and I get a really powerful signal outside..I will be moving it permanently shortly.

You can also use the DAP-1522 as a wireless bridge…If you don’t have ethernet run to your entertainment centre you can plug whatever devices you want to connect to the home network and it will pick up the signal from your router or access point and pass it to the devices. In this mode it is practically useless enclosed inside the cabinet..you have to get it up and away from the other electronics if you want to get enough bandwidth..if you can do that it is a really handy device.

The D-Link DAP-1522 Xtreme N Duo Wireless Bridge/Access Point is available at Best Buy for $79.99
