Canadians Guinae Pigs for NYT subscription plan

All good things must come to an end, to quote an old cliche and today is..for Canadian users..the end of full and free access to the New York Times online. The Times’ new subscription plan will roll out worldwide on March 28th but for the next ten days the plan is being tested on Canadian subscribers.

Many people won’t notice the difference because the Times is still allowing considerable free access. On the website, you can view 20 articles each month at no charge including slide shows, videos and other rich features. If you access the Times from a smartphone or tablet app only the Top Stories section will be free of charge. Once you reach your 20 articles limit or want to read more than the Top Stories section you will be asked to subscribe

If you are linked to a Times article links from a search, blog or social media such as Facebook or Twitter you will be able to read those articles, even if you have reached your monthly reading limit. For some search engines, users will have a daily limit of free links. The Times release does not identify these search engines.

Home delivery subscribers will have free access to all stories on the website or through apps at all times but will have to sign up for access at

The Times is offering three digital subscription packages: and Smartphone app, $15USD, and Tablet app, $20USD and full digital access is $35USD. All prices are per 4 weeks.

The email I received from the New York Times indicated that these charges would come into effect today however, as of 4:30PM Eastern Daylight time I still have full access from my iPad app.
