OnStar anywhere

Fifteen years ago GM led the way in Car Tech by installing the OnStar system in most of its vehicles. The feature, slow to catch on at first eventually became popular and sold a lot of GM vehicles when the Detroit Giant was having trouble getting people to look at their cars. Now you can have OnStar in any car.

The retail boxed version of the OnStar equipped rear view mirror will offer the core OnStar services such as automatic crash response, turn-by-turn navigation, stolen vehicle location assistance, emergency and roadside services and hands-free calling.

The mirror will be available in the spring at Best Buy and other selected auto electronics retailers for $299 plus installation of about $100. GM says the mirror will work on 99 percent of the top 20 selling non-GM vehicles made during the last 10 years.

The Car Tech business is starting to become very competitive with most major manufacturers rolling out similar services.
